ANIMATION

Translating and encapsulating the director's personal childhood experiences as well as past lived experiences, “You build a home in my mind” comprises of objects from childhood, including playground rides, climbing frames, basketball courts, and unique, special objects recalled from memories—weaving together a melody that lures the viewers to roam and wander. Imageries of the cityscape of Hong Kong are constantly spinning, scattering, and disappearing, sometimes circling and other times passing by. In their fleetingness, the fragments of the city are pieced together to create an intertwined and subtle narrative, drawing the viewer into searching for the memories it carries. As the boat navigates between memory and dream, resembling a journey of constant loss and persistent search, the scenes become slightly different when they reappear, alluding to the repetitiveness and uncertainty of life.

Park Voyage is a series of hand-drawn animations commissioned in 2022 by M+ Museum. Inspired by Shek Kip Mei Park, the bike lanes in the New Territories’ township of Sha Tin, and M+ museum, Florence Lee’s expressive animation takes viewers on an imaginary ride through a Hong Kong playground and subway tunnel. Geometric shapes, gestural linework, and rich colours create a fanciful space that intertwines memory and everyday life.

Elephant in Castle (2021) is a 2D digital animation, using a hand-drawn frame-by-frame process to create subtle abstract narratives. The work expresses a constant change within the artist’s inner world, depicting the emotional, aesthetic, and tactile responses that she has to Hong Kong, the city where she grew up. Stepping into a new decade, the world is coming to an unprecedented and critical moment in history. The film could be a reflection conveyed by the artist's sentimental responses to the stories/memories that took place in Hong Kong.
